Ethnography Field Note 6

For my sixth and final entry, I will be examining my writing in a data project I constructed for my class, Global Markets and Politics. This project asked us to choose a country and analyze two characteristics of a good society that this country does or does not have. I chose to analyze education and freedom of religion in Saudi Arabia. As this was a data project, I began by presenting as much data as I could for the country in both areas. As I did more research, the conclusions I wanted to draw became more clear. Likewise, I chose my data to better correlate with my final conclusions. After providing extensive data, I moved into the analytical portion of the memo. I referenced the works of various researchers that we discussed in class to draw conclusions from the data. In the context of the researchers’ frameworks, I explained how Saudi Arabia’s political system allows for the discrimination and religious intolerance that occurs there. I then explained how Saudi Arabia’s need to liberalize their economy was resulting in a rapid growth of education. I concluded the memo by demonstrating how Saudi Arabia’s political moves in the fields of education and religious liberty are closely connected.
